International Destinations with Modern Design We Love
Some of the world’s most popular cities have become leaders in modern design, focusing on striking architecture that deviates from traditional style and structure. Cities are embracing modern art and architecture partly because both attract tourism. People simply love marveling at the unusual twists, turns and heights of these man-made wonders. Check out why we just can’t get enough of these four international destinations with modern design:
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
From Rose Tower and Burj Khalifa to the Technosphere and Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai is full of luxurious modern design that attracts tourists from all around the world. Among these architectural beauties is Cayan Tower, a 73-story residential skyscraper standing 306 meters tall. This building makes our list because of its signature 90-degree twist that resembles a helix. Architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) ran into interesting issues while building Cayan Tower, as the building is largely a first of its kind. The installation of unconventional elevator shafts capable of operating inside a twisting building structure was among these challenges. The solution? Circular elevator shafts positioned in the center of the building. Now, that’s innovation.
China Central Television (CCTV), the main state television broadcaster in the People’s Republic of China, changed the Beijing skyline forever when they commissioned their headquarters building. Two leaning towers bent at 90 degrees at the top and bottom create a cranked loop shape. The CCTV headquarters stands 234 meters tall and was designed by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Koolhaas who was named the Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate in 2000.
In June 2007, the Royal Ontario Museum underwent a transformation when the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal extension opened to the public. The building’s five intersecting metal-clad volumes resemble crystals. The museum extension juts out of the ground in downtown central Toronto. This makes it a peak attraction for tourists and nearly impossible to miss. The Royal Ontario Museum refers to the Michael Lee-Chin Crystal extension as the “country’s premier cultural and social destination.” The next time you’re in Toronto, make sure to check it out along with the city’s other modern wonders, including Allan Lambert Hall (BCE Place Galleria), MaRS Centre, The Gooderham Building and more.
